The opening games of the newly established European Cup of Nations take place this weekend. Austria competes at the prestigious Germany Cup and celebrated a sensational 5–2 victory over the host nation. Earlier, Austria had suffered a clear 2–6 defeat against Slovakia. The tournament in Landshut concludes on Sunday with a matchup against Latvia. The other win2day ICE Hockey League nations have already completed their tournaments: Olympic host Italy earned two victories in Sosnowiec, Poland, as did Slovenia. In the direct duel between the two ICE nations for second place, Italy narrowly came out on top 3–2. The fourth ICE nation, Hungary, managed to defeat host and tournament winner France 6–4 in Épinal but failed to pick up points in the other two games, finishing the group in fourth and last place. The Austrian National Team will play its first games at the prestigious Deutschland Cup in Landshut, while the other three ICE nations will be in action in Poland and France. Austria's World Championship fairytale has come to an end in the quarter-finals. The ÖEHV team was clearly beaten 6-0 by the reigning runner-up Switzerland. The four nations participating in the win2day ICE Hockey League will be represented at the Top Division at the Ice Hockey World Championships in Switzerland in 2026. Marco Kasper (2), Vinzenz Rohrer, Pioneers Vorarlberg defender Ramón Schnetzer and league top scorer Peter Schneider from EC Red Bull Salzburg scored the goals. As Slovenia lost 4-0 to hosts Sweden in the evening game, Austria have already secured their place in the Top Division. Slovenia remains at the bottom of the table with no points. Hungary, the third ICE nation in the competition, was also in action on Friday. In the game against Denmark, the team squandered an early two-goal lead.
