Defending champion EC Red Bull Salzburg opened the new season with a 4:3 road win against HCB Südtirol Alperia. For 19-year-old Adrian Gesson, it was a night to remember: in just his third appearance, the Vorarlberg native scored his first-ever goal in the win2day ICE Hockey League – and was visibly thrilled afterwards.

“It was important that we won the first game. We can definitely build on that,” Gesson said. In the 29th minute, the forward netted the temporary 3:1 and described it as a “breathtaking moment”: “I just wanted to do my job and make the most of the opportunity. Scoring a goal on top of that is just incredible. I’m really happy.”

Having come through several stages of the Red Bull Academy, Gesson has been playing for the Red Bull Hockey Juniors for one and a half years and now serves as team captain. He sees the Alps Hockey League as a crucial step towards professional hockey: “It definitely plays a huge role because you face men for the first time. That’s always different compared to playing against your peers. That’s why the Alps Hockey League is such an important step for every young player.

Next up for Salzburg is a rematch of last season’s final against KAC. “It’s definitely going to be an interesting and tough game,” Gesson said. “Of course, I hope we can take all three points.”
