Austria earns shootout win against Slovenia

In the duel between the ICE nations, Austria celebrated a 3:2 shootout victory over Slovenia. This means that the team Austria still has a chance of reaching the quarter-finals. For the Slovenians, who will play their deciding game against France on Monday, it was their first point at the World Championship.

26 players (15 AUT/11 SLO) from the win2day ICE Hockey League were involved in Sunday's clash between Austria and Slovenia at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm. Defenceman Blaž Gregorc from Olimpija Ljubljana put the Slovenians ahead on power play, before Dominic Zwerger equalised shortly afterwards. It remained 1:1 until the third period, but in the 51st minute Brian Lebler from Steinbach Black Wings Linz beat the strong Ljubljana goalie Lukáš Horák for the second time - 2:1 in favour of Austria. The Slovenians struck back when Olimpija forward Robert Sabolič (54) equalised. The score remained the same until the end of regulation time and no goals were scored in overtime either. Graz's Lukas Haudum, Dominic Zwerger and Benjamin Baumgartner finally scored in the penalty shoot-out.

Austria can advance to the quarter-finals on Tuesday with a win after regulation time against Latvia (12:20 pm, live on ORF 1). Slovenia, on the other hand, will play their decisive match for staying in the top group against France on Monday (16:20).

Clear defeat for Hungary
In Herning/Denmark, Hungary suffered a clear 10-0 defeat against Switzerland on Sunday evening. In their final World Championship match on Monday (20:20), the Hungarian team can secure their place in the group with a point against Norway.
