After the narrow 1:3 opening defeat against Sweden, Austria also showed its quality in the second match of the IIHF Worlds on Sunday. The ÖEHV team challenged the USA from the first face-off and even took the lead in the 15th minute: after ideal assist by Marco Kasper, Benjamin Nissner from EC Red Bull Salzburg made it 1:0. Team Austria maintained this lead until the first period break. After the restart, the North Americans became stronger, but Austria survived individual periods of pressure and struck ice-cold in a counterattack. After a beautiful combination, debutant Paul Huber scored in the 35th minute to make it 2:0. But only 17 seconds later the world number four reduced the score, and in the third period the US team managed to equalise on power play. Regulation ended at 2:2, the Austrians went into overtime with a power play and were unlucky when Peter Schneider only hit the cross bar. The favourites finally scored on a counterattack to win 3:2. After gaining their first point at the IIHF Worlds, Austria will continue their campaign with a match against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

Canada turns match against Italy
Italy had to admit defeat against Canada with 1:6. The FISG side took the lead in the 13th minute through a goal by Phil Pietroniro, but the 27-time world champions equalised before the end of the first period. In the middle period, the Canadians lived up to their role as favourites with three goals, in the end celebrating a 6:1 victory. Italy will continue in Group A on Tuesday with a match against Denmark.
