After the exciting play-offs in the win2day ICE Hockey League - in which EC Red Bull Salzburg were crowned champions for the third time in a row in the seventh final - the ice hockey euphoria in the league nations continued. At the beginning of May, Hungary and Slovenia were immediately promoted back to the top division, with the teams securing the top two places at the Division 1 Group A World Championship in Bolzano. Hosts Italy, who organised an ice hockey festival in the Sparkasse Arena, had to settle for third place.

ICE players important pillars of the Austrian teams
25 players made up the roster of the Austrian national team at the IIHF World Championship in the top division in Prague. 18 players were involved in the win2day ICE Hockey League in the last season and played a major role in the team's success. Austria not only managed to remain in the top group, the ÖEHV selection had a chance of advancing to the quarter-finals right up to the match day of group stage. In the end, Team Austria finished the World Championships in tenth place. On the way to their best placing in 21 years, the team achieved something historic.

Austria picked up their first point against record world champions Canada. After trailing 1:6, the red-white-red team scored five goals in the third period and only had to concede defeat in over time after the greatest comeback in World Championship history. Peter Schneider from EC Red Bull Salzburg scored a brace in the brilliant comeback. In the next game, Austria held the upper hand for the first time ever against Olympic champions Finland, winning sensationally 3:2. Salzburg's David Kickert, who made spectacular saves throughout the tournament, became the 13th Austrian goalie in ice hockey history to win a game at a World Championship. With a 4:1 victory over Norway, the ÖEHV side then secured their place in the top group and even kept themselves in the race for promotion to the quarter-finals until the last matchday of the group stage.
