In the first period, the red-white-red cracks literally played the 2002 world champions to the boards. After around twelve minutes, they had 9:1 shots on goal and led 2:0. 1:0 in the eighth minute, Bernd Wolf laid the puck off ideally to the back, where Peter Schneider stormed in and finished with ice-cold precision. Marco Kasper danced his way through three Slovakian opponents in the twelfth minute with a bit of luck, curved round the goalkeeper lying on the ground and easily slid the puck over the line. The Slovaks got stronger in the middle period and Samuel Honzek reduced the deficit to 1:2. Lukas Haudum had another top-class chance in the middle of the final period, but instead of making it 3:1, Matus Sukel equalised at the other end, taking a long time in front of the goal until David Kickert was down and then lifting the disc high into the net - the scoreboard showed 2:2 after the final buzzer and Austria had secured their first point. Overtime brought nothing, the game was finally decided in the shootout, where Lukas Haudum and Peter Schneider scored, while David Kickert only allowed one goal. On Thursday, the ÖEHV team will face Canada (20:20, live on ORF SPORT +).

On Tuesday, the still point-less ICE nations Slovenia (16:20 against Latvia) and Hungary (20:20 against Kazakhstan) will play their third World Championship games.
