The visitors strike first, after merely a minute passed when Peter Schneider picks up a pass from Andreas Nodl. After a misplay in the attacking zone by Medvescak, the Capitals take the puck through the middle and Nikolaus Hartl was in place to bury it behind Carr. After 15 minutes Vienna is up 3:0 - Pollastrone shoots from the right, Carr deflects but the puck ends up in the crease behind his  back and Holzapfel has no problems putting it over the goal line. Kevin Carr leaves the net after the goal, Vilim Rosandic replaces him between the pipes. Medvescak cuts the lead to two three minuted before the break when Tyler Morley deflects a puck from the left post into the net.
Halfway through the second period, Medvescak applies pressure on the reigning champs, but they answer on a counter and Schneider finds Vause alone in the slot who buries the one-timer in the far upper shelf. Two minutes later on a powerplay Vienna makes it 5:1 after a scramble in front of the net: Holzapfel makes the most of it and puts it through traffic. A minute later 6:1 for the visitors: McKiernan fires and the puck goes through both the defenseman's and the goalie's legs as the Caps build on a huge lead. Medvescak answers in the dying moments of the second through Noonan on the powerplay. Both periods Vienna scores three, then Medvescak answers with one.
The final period was more or less just finishing the game, with few real chances. The game in the end had a low amount of penalties and it was a clear win for the Caps.
