On Saturday EC-KAC and UPC Vienna Capitals got their first home wins this Champions Hockey League campaign. The Carinthians beat Gap 4:2 with scoring three in the opening period. The Caps earned a 5:4 shootout win against Belarus side Grodno. In a preseason game, Medvescak Zagreb held the upper hand against Fehervar AV19, 5:2.
EC-KAC got off a perfect start with having a 2:0 lead after only two minutes, goals were scored by Bischofberger and Koch. Halfway through the first Regehr added a third and Klagenfurt was on top of things until the first intermission. Ross scored twice in the middle frame to make it a one-goal game and the French side pressed for the equalizer in the third. However, Ganahl decided it late with a shorthanded marker.
Caps get shootout win against Grodno
The fans in Vienna saw an intense game an early goals of their team. After five minutes Niki Hartl fired a rebound home and halfway thorugh the first captain Andreas Nödl doubled the score. Grodno tied the game with a brace but just a few moments later Vause restored Vienna's lead. Artyom Levsha tied it once again for a 3:3 score after 40 minutes. Vause celebrated his second of the night in the third, it was not enough, though. Pavel Boyarchuk sent the game to overtime where McKiernan only hit the post and goalie Lamoureux saved a penalty shot. In the shootout McGregor Sharp and Riley Holzapfel found the back of the net for a 5:4 Caps win.
99ers claim third place at Energie Steiermark Trophy
Moser Medical Graz99ers met HK Nitra in the placement game. The Slovaks scored the first periods only goal by Henrich Ruckay. The hosts were out of luck in the final minute when Justin Buzzeo only hit the post. Nitra was the stronger side early in the second, so 99ers coach Doug Mason took his time out. In further consequence Graz turned the game around thanks to two Brock Nixon goals. Early in the third Blackwater tied it but Graz decided the game to their favour. With ten minutes to go Florian Iberer scored the game winner and then Brock Higgs rounded off the scoring on pp.
Zagreb beats Fehervar
Zagreb dominated the game on the second day of the Gabor Ocskay Memorial Tournament. Youngsters Vizi Dániel and Szita Donát got the chance to play against the Bears. The guests started better, which resulted in an early goal, Rajsar scored after a nice pass in the 8th minute. In the first period, Kroselj had almost nothing to do and Morley missed a chance at the end of the period. The second period started better for the Devils, but they couldn’t score in the powerplay either, moreover, Morley scored a shorthanded goal after a mistake from Rajna. Fehervar started to get better, but LoVecchio and Kocsis both missed and later on the Hungarians missed another powerplay. Zagreb scored, however, on the powerplay, Koskiranta’s blue liner went straight in the net. LoVecchio’s goal broke the ice in another powerplay 6 minutes before the end of the period. Thomas Netik increased the difference in the 38th minute with a shot in the upper right corner. The last period went on without good chances on wither sides in the first 8 minutes, then Zagreb scored their fifth goal after a counterattack, this time Nathan Perkovich. Erdely hit the post, and in the middle of the period both Morley and Pöyhönen got a penalty and Harty scored Fehervar’s second goal. In the remaining time, Fehervar had more chances but the result remained 2-5.
Linz suffers clear-cut defeat against Färjestadts
Florian Janny got the nod over Mike Ouzas in the Linz' net when facing Färjestadts. The Swedes took the lead after two minutes but new arrival Jake Dowell scored the equalizer before the first itnermission. After the halfway point of the game Steen restored Färjestadts lead and they added a third later in the period. In the third it was all Färjestadts who scored four more goals against tired Black Wings.
Tournament win for Bolzano
HC Bolzano won Rittner tournament with a 3:1 final win against Visp. The game in Klobenstein was a mere 137 seconds old when Austin Smith opened the scoring. Halfway through the first the Swiss side tied the game and the score remained the same until the third period. 52 seconds into the period Travis Oleksuk retook Bolzano's lead and soon later Alex Petan made the game safe.
