For the 26-year-old American, who has already arrived in Vienna, the Capitals are the first European team of his career. Drafted in 2014 by the Los Angeles Kings, the defender last played for the Cleveland Monsters in the American Hockey League. He played a total of 43 games in the AHL and played in the ECHL too.

Johnson is expected to bring more depth on the defensive end for the Caps. "We currently have two injured import defensemen in Brett Flemming and Alex Wall. With both of them, the exact timing of their return is not clear at the moment. With the signing of Steve, we create more flexibility in the defense on the one hand. On the other hand, he will also provide the necessary relief for our young homegrown defenders in the coming, intensive phase of the season. After all, the physical strain in the Pick Round and in the playoffs is enormous", says head coach Dave Cameron.
