Where the Vienna Capitals usually battle for points in front of their passionate fans in the win2day ICE Hockey League, an entirely different kind of hockey spectacle will take place this Saturday. At 6:00 p.m., the STEFFL Arena hosts the Night of Hockey Legends, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the two-time Austrian champions. On this special occasion, the Caps Heroes will face off against the Czech Icons.

Tickets for the live experience are still available. The Night of Hockey Legends will also be broadcast live on ORF Sport+ and streamed via ORF ON and www.sporteurope.tv.

The Caps Heroes roster features legendary figures from Vienna’s hockey history such as Jonathan Ferland, Benoit Gratton, and Phil Lakos. The Czech Icons, meanwhile, will include Olympic champions from 1998, world champions, and Stanley Cup winners like Dominik Hašek, Milan Hejduk, and Patrik Eliáš.

There will be plenty to experience around the STEFFL Arena throughout the day. The Fan Village opens at 3:00 p.m., where fans can stock up on merchandise or collect autographs and selfies with players from both the Night of Hockey Legends and the current Vienna Capitals lineup. Inside the arena, the audience can look forward to plenty of action.

The game will be played over three 15-minute periods. Familiar Capitals enforcers like Phil Lakos or Benoit Gratton will, for once, stay away from the penalty box—penalties will instead be replaced by penalty shots. If the game remains tied after regulation, a five-minute three-on-three overtime will follow; should there still be no winner, the contest will be decided in a shootout. Regardless of the result, a show-style penalty competition is guaranteed to take place.

Jonathan Ferland, forward of the Caps Heroes
“Coming back to the STEFFL Arena brings back so many memories. I never thought I’d get the chance to play here again in front of the Caps fans. It’s going to be an incredible experience, and I’m really happy to be a part of it. It was great to see everyone again during practice after so many years. We tried to get back in sync, even though for some of us it’s been quite a while since we last played competitively. I won a few titles in my career, but the championship with the Capitals was the most special one for me. I played nine years in Austria, and in my last season in Vienna we finally captured that long-awaited title.”

Patrik Eliáš, forward of the Czech Icons
“We’re here for a great occasion, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Capitals organization, which will be fantastic. We’re all happy to be part of it and will really enjoy the evening. Hopefully we can put on a good show and have a lot of fun with the fans. For us, the Night of Hockey Legends is also a wonderful chance to see each other again after so many years. I still get on the ice from time to time, and hopefully I’ll be able to show a few of my skills—though of course, I’ve gotten a bit older too.”

Tickets for the live event are still available. The Night of Hockey Legends will also be shown live on ORF Sport+ and streamed via ORF ON and sporteurope.tv.
