CHL defeats for Salzburg and Graz | Preseason ends with derby win for Budapest

EC Red Bull Salzburg and Moser Medical Graz99ers both suffered road defeats in the Champions Hockey League on Sunday. The Red Bulls fell 3-6 to Växjö Lakers, while the 99ers suffered a 2-6 defeat at Bílí Tygři Liberec. Sunday also marked the end of the preseason, which concluded with a Hungarian derby between Hydro Fehérvár AV19 and FTC-Telekom. The visitors from Budapest came out on top in a close contest, winning 4-3.

Salzburg made a very poor start and found themselves 0-3 down after the opening period. By the 27th minute, the Swedish side had extended its lead to 5-0. Only then did the Red Bulls find their way into the game, with Dennis Robertson getting them on the board in the 31st minute. There was even a brief glimmer of hope in the final period, as Benjamin Nissner (42nd) and Nick Poisson (45th) cut the deficit to 3-5. However, Växjö Lakers did not allow Salzburg to get any closer and sealed the 6-3 final score with an empty-net goal 14 seconds before the end. Salzburg dropped to 20th place in the standings.

Another defeat for Graz
It was a fourth defeat in four CHL games for Graz. The 99ers kept the game close for a long time in Liberec but ultimately suffered a 2-6 defeat. The score was still tied at 2-2 in the 52nd minute after Josh Currie (25th) and Chris Collins (49th) had erased an earlier 0-2 deficit. However, the reigning ICE Hockey League champions had no response after conceding the third goal, and the Czech side added three more in the final two minutes. Graz dropped to last place in the standings.

Budapest wins preseason derby in Székesfehérvár
Fehérvár and Budapest produced a thrilling contest in front of 2,800 fans in the final preseason game involving win2day ICE Hockey League teams. The visitors eventually claimed a narrow 4-3 victory, with Ferenc Laskawy scoring the decisive goal with 32 seconds remaining.

After a scoreless opening period, the hosts struck first and opened up a 2-0 lead. FTC managed to tie the game before the end of the second period and then took the lead for the first time in the final period. Fehérvár equalized with two and a half minutes remaining, but a late goal ultimately secured a 4-3 derby victory for the team from the Hungarian capital.
