EC Red Bull Salzburg were beaten 1:0 by HC Fribourg-Gottéron in the Champions Hockey League. In a game that was fast-paced from the start, the Salzburgers had more of the first period, but in the end they also had to survive two shorthanded situations. It went into the dressing rooms goalless after 20 minutes. The tempo remained high after the break and the game went back and forth. Tyler Lewington (31st) from half distance and Ali Wukovits alone in front of the visitors' goalie Connor Hughes (32nd) missed very good opportunities. In the 34th minute, the Swiss took the lead against the run of play, Janne Kuokkanen scored on a rebound. Salzburg immediately turned up the heat again and had several good chances. The best one was Benjamin Nissner (37th), who failed twice against the Fribourg goalkeeper. The Red Bulls were close to equalising, but had to go into the second intermission with the score at 0:1. In the final period, the home side increased the pace and - except for an early shorthanded play - could hardly get out of the offensive zone. However, the Swiss made the space in front of the goal tight and lurked on the counterattack. Despite further chances, the score remained 0:1 after 60 minutes. In one week, the return match in Fribourg-Gottéron will be a real final for the Red Bulls to advance to the CHL play-off. The win2day ICE Hockey League leaders are second behind Fribourg-Gottéron after five group games, one point ahead of third-placed Ilves Tampere.

Olimpija lose to leaders Zug
HK SZ Olimpija had to admit defeat in the fifth CHL game as well. Against EV Zug, the Slovenians fell behind in the eighth minute. The Swiss added another goal nine seconds before the first period break. The leaders from Group B clearly set the tone, especially in the middle period, and Brian O'Neill scored his second goal of the game in the 33rd minute. Olimpija never gave up, took command in the third period and was rewarded with the consolation goal: After Ziga Pance had won the puck, Tadej Cimzar scored from close range (50th) to make the final score 1:3.
