With Cody Porter between the pipes, HC Gherdeina valgardena.it picked up its first regulation win of the season on Saturday. The Canadian newcomer posted a shutout in the 4-0 win over EC-KAC Future Team, and the 29-year-old was quick to share the credit: “It’s a team thing, so I’ve always been a big believer that a shutout is a team stat. Wouldn’t be able to do it without those guys, so I’m really thankful for that.”

From Kaufbeuren to Gherdeina
Gherdeina is Porter’s first stop in Italy. The North Vancouver native has played in Finland and Kazakhstan, among others, and spent last season with ESV Kaufbeuren in Germany’s DEL2. Now he guards the net for the defending champions, who swept HC Meran/o Pircher 4-0 in last spring’s final to win their first Alps Hockey League title. “It’s a good group of guys, good team, beautiful city, people have been really friendly. Obviously Italy, can’t go wrong with it. I’ve really enjoyed my time so far.”

South Tyrolean derby on Thursday
Porter wants to build on the win: “It’s important for the team that we get the three points. I thought we collectively played well [against Klagenfurt] and it was nice to see some guys get some goals. We’ll just try and build off it for next game.” The next chance comes tomorrow, Thursday, when Gherdeina hosts Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan. The Broncos won the first meeting on home ice 6-5 in a shootout in late September, after Gherdeina had battled back from 2-5 down.
