In the last round before Christmas, the leading duo HCB Südtirol Alperia and Hydro Fehérvár AV19 suffered away defeats. While EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV celebrated their ninth victory in a row on Sunday, EC-KAC won against Salzburg.
HCB Südtirol Alperia's eight-game winning streak against the spusu Vienna Capitals came to an end on Sunday. After a goalless first period, the home side went ahead through Zane Franklin. But Bolzano turned the game around with two goals within two minutes. In the third period, the momentum turned back in favour of the home side. After Gregoire equalised (42nd/PP), Leon Wallner made it 3:2 in the 49th minute and the Caps returned to winning ways in front of over 6,000 fans, moving up to ninth place in the table.
The fact that Bolzano are still top of the table at Christmas is thanks to Olimpija Ljubljana. After seven defeats in a row, the Slovenians returned to winning ways with a 4:1 home victory against Hydro Fehérvár AV19 in the first game of interim head coach Andrej Tavželj. After 36 goalless minutes, the game went from blow to blow, with both teams scoring within 53 seconds. In the third period, two-time Stanley Cup champion Nick Bonino put the home side on the road to victory with a brace.
Steinbach Black Wings Linz are now just one point behind Bolzano and level with Fehérvár in third place. The Upper Austrians lived up to their role as favourites against HC TIWAG Innsbruck in front of more than 4,600 spectators. While Linz initially missed a few chances, the visitors proved to be efficient - the score was 2:2 after 44 minutes. But eight minutes before the end, Niklas Würschl put Linz ahead for the third time that evening. Sean Collins scored an empty netter to make the final score 4:2.
Victories for Carinthian clubs
EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV (still in seventh place) continued their winning streak against the fourth-placed Moser Medical Graz99ers. The Carinthians won 2:1 on the comeback of JP Lamoureux, who recorded 37 saves in his first game after his month-long injury break. The home side took the lead in the 29th minute through Guus van Nes, Philipp Lindner increased the lead to 2:0 early in the third period. The Styrians managed to close the gap again through Paul Huber, but were beaten by VSV for the second time in a row.
The EC-KAC also won their third duel of the season against the shorthanded EC Red Bull Salzburg. The Red Jackets took the lead after just 28 seconds through Raphael Herburger in front of more than 4,400 fans. In the middle period, the reigning champions briefly turned the game in their favour, but Klagenfurt managed to equalise shortly before the second period break to make it 2:2. Five minutes before the end, Tobias Sablattnig put the KAC back in front, which was also the game-winner. In the end, the Carinthians won 5:2 and overtook the now sixth-placed Salzburg team in the table.
Only away win for the Pioneers
The only away victory was recorded by the Pioneers Vorarlberg, with head coach Dylan Stanley's team winning 4:1 in Asiago. The visitors took the lead in the fifth minute through David Keefer, with captain Alexander Pallestrang adding to his tally shortly afterwards. The Pioneers came out on top in the end, with goalie David Madlener missing a potential shutout by conceding a goal 20 seconds before the end. It was the Vorarlberg team's second away win against Asiago this season.
