The Vienna Capitals have strengthened their defensive unit with Canadian defenseman Marc-Olivier Duquette. The 27-year-old joins the Austrian capital club from Swedish side IK Oskarshamn. The 193-centimeter left-shot defenseman has signed a contract valid until the end of the season.

Following the recent signing of Nate Kallen, which was made to fill the roster spot vacated after the departure of Cole Hults, the short-term acquisition of Duquette became necessary due to the strained personnel situation on defense. In the coming weeks, the Capitals will be without Erik Kirchschläger, who is sidelined with an upper-body injury. In addition, defensive leader Nelson Nogier will also be unavailable for at least the remainder of the regular season due to an upper-body injury.

Although Duquette has already arrived in Vienna, his participation in this week’s two games is considered unlikely due to ongoing administrative procedures. Nevertheless, his signing provides important depth for the final phase of the regular season and with a view toward the Capitals’ highly probable qualification for the Pre-Playoffs.

“I’m extremely excited to be part of the Vienna Capitals. For me, this is a welcome new beginning. Joining at such an important stage of the season is a great challenge,” said Duquette. “It’s always difficult to arrive so late in the season when everyone already knows each other and has battled together for most of the year. Still, I want to contribute as much as possible. I’m also really looking forward to playing with Nate Kallen again. We were good friends during our time in Maine, and it will be great to be teammates once more.”
