HCB Südtirol Alperia and EC-KAC impress in the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League with their defensive work and low goals against average. No team from a top European league (CHL top 6) concedes fewer goals per game than the South Tyroleans. In a direct comparison, Klagenfurt also only lose out to league rivals and Finnish league leader Rauman Lukko.

HCB Südtirol Alperia (1.77) and EC-KAC (1.97) have conceded fewer than two goals per game this season. Looking at the other top European leagues (CHL ranking top 6 leagues), with Rauman Lukko (Liiga) only one club can keep up with a similar value. Like the Foxes, the Finnish team also lead their league. Thus, in this comparison, the EC-KAC is the only team among the European top-6 leagues that is not at the top of the standings with a goals against average of less than two.

Bolzano threatens eternal KAC record
Since the league was founded, only three teams has been able to finish the first phase of the regular season with fewer than two goals against per game. The last time the EC-KAC itself achieved this was last season (1.98), when no champions were crowned. Prior to that, not a single team managed to do so for 17 seasons. The current record is also held by the KAC with 1.69 goals against per game in the first year of the league's new foundation. The South Tyroleans could now break the eternal record. To do so, however, they should only concede a total of five goals in the remaining five games.

Bolzano head coach Greg Ireland talks about his team's defensive mentality in an interview with bet-at-home ICE Hockey League:
