In the Alps Hockey League, HK RST Pellet Celje and the Rittner Buam SkyAlps celebrated derby victories on Thursday. While Red Bull Hockey Juniors and EC Bregenzerwald also prevailed on the road, Hafro Cortina Hockey secured the only home win: the Italians defeated league leaders Zell am See 6:0.
The Zeller Eisbären's three-game winning streak came to an end on Thursday at Cortina. The home side took the lead after just 62 seconds through Nikita Ushnev, Luca Barnabò made it 2:0 in the first period. In the middle period, Barnabò and Leonardo Felicetti added two more thanks to a brace within three minutes, making it 4:0. In the final period, the AHL runners-up managed two more goals to win 6:0, with goalie Hayden Hawkey recording his second shutout of the season.
Zell am See's first rivals are now the Rittner Buam SkyAlps. The reigning champions celebrated their fifth win in a row against Gröden. Alan Lobis (19th/PP) scored the only goal in the first period in a game that was evenly balanced for long stretches. Ritten briefly pulled 3:0 ahead in the middle period, but Jordan Di Cicco reduced the deficit for the home side before the second break. Manuel Öhler restored the three-goal lead with his second goal of the evening, with the visitors ultimately winning 4:2 and overtaking Kitzbühel in the table.
Defeats for top 5 teams Jesenice and Sisak
Aleksanteri Heiskanen celebrated a perfect debut for Celje. The Finnish goalie recorded 46 saves in the derby at Jesenice and helped his team to a 2:1 away win. Although the home side took the lead in the third minute through Anze Prostor, Celje equalised in the first period. Miha Logar scored the game-winner in the 28th minute and Celje moved up to seventh place.
After five previous defeats, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors returned to winning ways, beating Sisak 4:1 on the road. After taking the lead in the first period through Adrian Gesson, the hosts equalised in the second period through Niko Mikkola in front of almost 1,000 spectators. Paul Vinzens put the Juniors back in front shortly before the second break. Salzburg extended their lead in the final period with further goals from Vinzens and 17-year-old Paul Oberhauser to secure the win.
Bregenzerwald also wins in Merano
EC Bregenzerwald also won their second season meeting against Merano. The team from Vorarlberg took the lead late in the first period through Marcel Wohlmuth and extended this advantage to 3:0 in the middle period (Lipsbergs 29th / Hintermann 40th). Shortly after the restart, Teruto Nakajima scored for Meran and the score remained 1:3 until the final buzzer. Bregenzerwald thus improved to tenth place.
