After a disappointing last season, in which the spusu Vienna Capitals only finished eleventh and missed out on the playoffs, the Austrian capitals are eager to start the season on Friday. With a new head coach and a heavily rebuilt team, the team wants to put last season behind them. The 34-year-old veteran Dominique Heinrich is optimistic that the Capitals will be much stronger this season.

The spusu Vienna Capitals only finished eleventh last season, missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2004. For the coming season, it is clear that this should not happen again, as veteran Dominique Heinrich knows: “Last season didn't go according to plan, we want to make up for that as quickly as possible and start the new season. We've learned a lot from it and a lot has changed within the club. A lot has changed on the board and a large part of the team has been replaced. We are eager for the new season.”

In addition to some changes on the board and in the team, the Capitals have also hired a new head coach in Gerry Fleming. The 56-year-old Canadian coached EHC Kloten from the Swiss National League last season. Prior to that, Fleming had already worked in Europe in the DEL with the Löwen Frankfurt as Head Coach and with the Eisbären Berlin as Assistant Coach. Dominique Heinrich is already convinced by the new head coach: “We will have more structure in the game this season. Gerry Fleming is someone who was very well prepared right from the start and I think you'll see that on the ice.”

The Vienna Capitals kick off the season on Friday in front of their home crowd. Their first opponent will be the Moser Medical Graz99ers (7:15 p.m./live.ice.hockey). For Vienna-born Dominique Heinrich, however, the duels with his former club Salzburg are particularly special: “The first highlight is of course the season opener, which we're all looking forward to. But of course the games against Salzburg are highlights for me and I'm generally really looking forward to playing in front of a hopefully often sold-out Steffl Arena.”
