Lena Artner put the hosts ahead in the third minute. In a game that was evenly balanced for long stretches, the Sabres held on to a narrow lead for a long time. But just when the Lower Austrians had more of the play in the third period, the visitors equalised through Cassidy Maplethorpe. The game remained a 1:1 draw until the end, with the second leg taking place in Zeltweg on Sunday.

In the duel for third place, the EVB Eagles South Tyrol won the first game against HK PSRZ Bratislava 2:0, with Eleonora Bonafini breaking the scoring deadlock shortly before the second period break. In the third period, Emma Cereghini made sure of the final score with a shorthander. Game two will take place again in Bratislava on Saturday.
