Klagenfurt made a strong start and did a good job of keeping the Haie away from dangerous scoring areas. EC-KAC was rewarded in the eighth minute when Raphael Herburger redirected a slap shot from Clemens Unterweger to give his team a 1-0 lead, which held until the first intermission.

Köln tied the game on the power play in the second period. Patrick Russell converted his own rebound in the 24th minute to make it 1-1. EC-KAC continued to create chances and had opportunities on its own power play before Russell struck again late in the period to give the Haie their first lead of the night.

Early in the third period, Köln appeared to have extended the lead to 3-1, but the goal was overturned following a successful coach's challenge by EC-KAC. The Red Jackets remained within striking distance and pushed for the equalizer. The decision came in the 58th minute when Marcel Noebels finished off a cross-crease pass to make it 3-1.

Despite a strong performance, EC-KAC ultimately came away empty-handed in the Champions Hockey League.
