“best-of-seven” semifinals: 1:3
Hydro Fehérvár AV19 has the first chance to advance to the final series of the win2day ICE Hockey League on Friday, as the Hungarians lead the "best-of-seven" semifinal series against EC GRAND Immo VSV 3:1 and are just one win short from advancing to the final series. After Villach won the first duel with the Hungarians after overtime, the Magyars recently prevailed three times in a row: While the first two victories were sovereign, the one in game four resembled a roller coaster ride. Despite an early 3:0 lead, the team from Székesfehérvár had to go into overtime - but Janos Hari redeemed his team after just 63 minutes. Hari is currently also the best AVS scorer in this postseason, as the 29-year-old is averaging 2.0 points (6G|10A), in the last 14 games the forward has always recorded at least one scoring point. Fehervar has been convincing in shorthanded situations so far this series, conceding only one powerplay goal (10/11). Villach, meanwhile, is struggling with personnel worries, missing seven regulars on Wednesday. For the home game, at least the comeback of current playoff top scorer John Hughes seems assured, whether Brett Flemming and Jamie Fraser are ready for action will be decided shortly before the start of the game. Felix Maxa, Chris Collins, Yannik Pilloni and Alexander Schmidt will definitely be absent.
Villach has faced a 1:3 deficit in a best-of-seven series seven times in its playoff history since the league was founded in 2000. The "Adler" have never succeeded in advancing, losing five times already in game five. For Hydro Fehérvár AV19, advancing to the final would be the biggest success since joining the league in 2007, with a first-ever semi-final appearance and qualification for the 2022/23 Champions Hockey League season marking further milestones in the current campaign.
