Stanley hits game winner for Feldkirch in shorthanded situation
Two days after the victory over EC Bregenzerwald, BEMER VEU Feldkirch scored another derby win and defeated EHC Lustenau 3:2. For the first time this season VEU won two games in a row, the "Stickers" had to admit defeat after five wins in a row. Feldkirch played a strong opening frame, led 2:0 after 20 minutes with goals from Austin Kofler (6./PP1) and Niklas Gehringer (16.). But the guests compensate the deficit until the 49th minute - and had a power play soon later after the equalizer because Patrick Bolterle was out for hooking. But the home team took advantage of that - and Dylan Stanley's sixth goal of the season decided the encounter.
The third Alps Hockey League team from Vorarlberg fought a duel with the league leader, as EC Bregenzerwald was defeated by HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice 4:5 after overtime despite a brilliant comeback. The Slovenians corrected their defeat from Friday (4:7 @EHC) immediately and are now on 49 points after their 17th win of the season. The goals of Ziga Urukala (38.) and Elo Eetu (40.) in the final phase of the middle period and one of Erik Svetina (51.) gave the AHL leaders a comfortable lead. But the "Wälder" fought back: Zwerger, Schlögl and Ranftl get their team into the overtime in the last six minutes. There, league top scorer Eric Pance secured the extra point for the Slovenians.
Strong middle frame puts Ritten in second place
With a 5:3 home win over HC Meran/o Pircher the Rittner Buam won also their third game this week. The fourth win in a row let Santeri Heisskanen's team climb back up to second place in the table. After a balanced opening frame, the 2017 champions pulled away with three goals in the middle period: in addition to the two young stars Robert and Manuel Öhler, Ritten's top scorer MacGregor Sharp scored, netting for the 14th time in the current championship. Kevin Fink, another homegrown player, also scored for the hosts. Merano was thus defeated in its second duel of the season with Ritten.
Salzburg and Vienna cheers shutout wins
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors and the Vienna Capitals Silver did not concede a goal each. Salzburg prevailed 3:0 at home against the EC-KAC Future Team, with Florian Bugl stopping 31 shots on goal and recording his second shutout of the season. Luca Auer (31.) and Sten Fischer (35.) scored the decisive goals in the second period for the hosts, which immediately got back on the winning track after Friday's shootout defeat and inflicted Klagenfurt's sixth loss in a row. For Salzburg, it was the third game of the season without conceding a goal.
The bottom-ranked team from Vienna, dominated EC Die Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel, celebrating their third win of the season with a 4:0 victory after four defeats in a row, the second without conceding a goal. Valentin Ploner (14./PP1) gave the home team the lead right in the first power play, Martin Kosnar, Mathias Böhm and Christoph Draschkowitz sealed the deal in the final period for the efficient Viennese (22 shots on goal). Goalie Stefan Steen stopped all 35 shots. Kitzbühel conceded its eighth defeat in the last nine games and remained scoreless for the second time this season.
Broncos take second win within 24 hours
The Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan won the second game on their road trip, as they prevailed 4:2 at the Steel Wings Linz and remained victorious against the Upper Austrians also in the fifth duel. Johan Lorraine, who scored a brace in the end, put the twelfth-placed team in the lead after just 80 seconds. Linz permanently stood up to the challenge - but the guests always had the right answer. For the Steel Wings, it was the sixth defeat in the last seven games.
Zell am See wins first game under new head coach
EK Die Zeller Eisbären gave their new head coach Martin Ekrt his first win in his second game. They defeated 16-time Italian champions S.G. Cortina Hafro 3:2, leaving them without a point in the debut of newcomer Joe Basaraba, who collected one assist. The first lead of the home side was equalized within 19 seconds, nevertheless Tobias Dinhopel (19.) gave the "Eisbären" an advantage after the first period. Captain Hubert Berger (32.) doubled the lead, which goalie Max Zimmermann carried over with a save percentage of 95.1% (39 saves). For Zell am See it was the first win after three defeats, while Cortina lost again after three victories.
