EC Red Bull Salzburg celebrated a 2:1 away win after overtime to open the final, continuing an impressive streak: The Salzburg team has won ten of the last twelve opening games of a playoff series. They have now won seven away games in a row in the knockout phase of the championship. In contrast to the EC-KAC, the defending champions also scored in the power play in the first encounter. The Red Bulls have already scored a total of five overtime goals against the Carinthians this season - on 15 occasions. On average, Salzburg only needed 5:03 minutes in numerical superiority per goal.

Historically, a 1-0 lead in a best-of-7 series proved to be extremely promising for the Red Bulls: In 25 out of 27 cases in which Salzburg won the first game, they also left the ice as the series winner. Remarkably, only one club has ever managed to beat the Red Bulls after trailing 0:1 - the EC-KAC. Klagenfurt turned both the 2012 quarter-final and the 2017 semi-final 4:2 in their favor.

Overall, a 1-0 deficit in a best-of-7 series is not too much of a burden for the EC-KAC historically: In 17 cases, Klagenfurt trailed after game one, but in 13 of those series they immediately managed to equalize in game two. The last time the Red & Whites were unsuccessful in the second game was in the 2017 final against the Vienna Capitals - since then, an opening defeat has been followed by six consecutive wins in the second encounter.

The record in Salzburg does not speak against the KAC either: In last year's final series, the EC-KAC won two out of three away games at the Eisarena Salzburg by a three-goal difference. Only one match was lost in three-on-three overtime.
