Release from 23.11.2024
The EK Zeller Eisbären extended their lead in the Alps Hockey League standings on Saturday with a shutout at Bregenzerwald. While the top 5 teams HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice and Rittner Buam SkyAlps celebrated home victories, Hafro Cortina prevailed at Sisak. In addition, Hockey Club Gardena ended its losing streak and the bottom side Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan won for the second time in a row - Connor Sanvido scored five goals in a 7:2 win against the Juniors.
The EK Zeller Eisbären extended their lead in the table with a clear 5:0 win at EC Bregenzerwald. In front of over 1,000 spectators, Matt McLeod put the visitors ahead after ten minutes and Hubert Berger increased the lead to 2:0 shortly afterwards. The Pinzgau team continued to set the tone in the middle period, with Nick Huard scoring shortly before the second period break. EKZ goalie Max Zimmermann finally recorded his second shutout of the season.
HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice improved to second place with a resounding victory over Unterland. Jasa Jenko opened the scoring in the third minute and the home side led 4:0 at the end of the first period. The Slovenians added to their lead after the restart, with Jaka Sturm scoring his second goal of the evening in the 32nd minute to make it 6:1. In the end, Jesenice won 9:2, the second-highest home win of the season for head coach Niko Eronen's team.
The South Tyrolean duel between the Rittner Buam SkyAlps and HC Meran Pircher had everything a derby should have: a fast pace of play and lots of goals met with plenty of toughness and even more penalties. In the end, the Buam managed to take revenge for the overtime defeat in the first encounter and won the heated game 5:3. With their third success in a row, the reigning champions moved up to fourth place.
Over 1,600 fans watched the clash between Sisak and Cortina. The home side took the lead twice that evening, but the Italians equalised on both occasions. Leonardo Felicetti made it 2:2 in the 33rd minute and Gabriele Parini put the visitors ahead for the first time just 18 seconds later. Sisak had chances to equalise in the third period, but Lehtonen scored an empty netter in the final minute to make it 2:4. Sisak dropped to fifth place with their third defeat in a row, Cortina is now sixth.
Val Gardena ended its five-game losing streak with a win at Celje. The Slovenians took the lead in both the first and second period, but the South Tyroleans equalised in each. In the third period, Stephan Deluca and Vili Laitinen put the "Furie" on the road to victory. Also because Celje were unable to capitalise on several powerplay opportunities, Val Gardena left the ice with a 4:3 victory. The South Tyroleans thus improved to ninth place.
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors suffered a clear 2:7 defeat against the Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan. Despite an early goal from Daniel Assavolyuk, the Juniors were unable to get back into their game. The visitors from Sterzing turned the match in their favour with a Sanvido brace in the first period. The Sterzing forward scored five goals on the evening. Although the Broncos remain bottom of the table, they are now only a few points behind mid-table.
