Sebastian Thaler (#61) of HC Meran/o Pircher, time 38:48, made contact with an opponent deemed as Boarding, IIHF Rule 41. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 2 – ‘Reckless’ – a deliberate and/or dangerous action with no concern for the result, with a conscious action to provoke, through intent and a willful purpose. Injury is not the determining factor but can be considered as influential means to the decision.

According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the AHL PSC, player Sebastian Thaler (#61) of HC Meran/o Pircher will receive supplementary discipline under rule 41 – Boarding.

On Thursday night, December 30th, in Meran, HC Meran/o Pircher forward #61, Sebastian Thaler checked Kitzbühel defenceman, #78 Niklas Wetzl into the boards, which the game officials assessed a 5 minute + GM for Boarding.

As the video shows, with Meran forcing play in the attacking zone, Thaler, on the fore check, made a check to the back side of Wetzl, that occurred a danger distance from the boards. Through the backside contact, the force propelled Wetzl head first into the boards. The check was sent to the AHL PSC and determined supplementary discipline is required.

It is important to note that the check is not overly forceful, but due to the fact it is directly from behind, the contact was enough to send Wetzl into the boards. It was also taken into account that Wetzl skated into the skating lane of Thaler and was unaware of his surroundings, as Wetzl was puck focused. However, in consideration of Wetzl unaware, and should be, it is still the responsibility of Thaler to skate to minimize or avoid backside contact, especially when an opposing player is positioned a dangerous distance from the boards. The check that Thaler made did lead to an apparent injury.

Key references:

  • This is boarding
  • Dangerous distance from the boards
  • Considered category 2 - Reckless
  • Not a repeat offender

From the perspective of DOPS and according to the AHL Penalty Catalog Ref. Nr. 113 - Boarding, Sebastian Thaler (#61) of HC Meran/o Pircher, is suspended for 4 games, effective immediately.
