Bottom of the table Steinbach Black Wings Linz will play at the EC-KAC in the first game of the new year. The team from Linz could win only one of the past ten games and are clear underdogs. The reigning champions from Klagenfurt, for their part, have only managed to win two of their last five games. They occupy the sixth place in the table. Both previous season duels were extremely close and were only decided in favor of the away team after overtime or shootout. From the past ten direct duels, the Black Wings have won six. This season, however, it is the defense that is the Upper Austrians' biggest problem area. With 114 goals conceded, they have the second worst defense. Only Dornbirn has conceded more goals. The KAC, in turn, has the third best defense in the league.

The HC Tesla Orli Znojmo is currently tenth in the table. At the moment, the Czechs would be the last team to qualify for the pre-playoffs. Opponent Hydro Fehérvár AV19, on the other hand, is on their way to the direct playoff qualification. With the victory against Vienna, on the last matchday of the old year, they climbed to the second place in the table. Away, however, the Hungarians could not win any of the past four games, including in Znojmo, where they lost with 3:6 on December 26th. The Czechs picked up at least one point in seven of their past ten home games, winning six.

The fourth and for the time being last west derby will be played by the Dornbirn Bulldogs and HC TIWAG Innsbruck - Die Haie on Sunday. Innsbruck won two of three duels so far. However, in the last encounter, on December 21st, the Bulldogs clearly kept the upper hand with 5:1. The "Sharks", who started very strong into the season, got a bit out of step lately and have to tremble again for the participation in the postseason. Only three wins from the past ten games and thus currently only ninth place in the table is the result. Dornbirn is on the upswing with three wins from the past five games, but is still only twelfth in the table. But the top 10 are still within reach. The Bulldogs' big problem is their home performance. The 5:0 home win over Pustertal in the last game in front of their own fans, was the first after previously twelve home defeats in a row.

League leader EC Red Bull Salzburg is looking for its ninth win in a row at the HC Pustertal Wölfe. They are still four wins short of their own club record. However, Pustertal is a fearful opponent of the Red Bulls this season. The league newcomer has scored at least one point in all three duels with Salzburg. In the last encounter, they even won. The 3:4-SO home defeat on December 3rd was also the last defeat for the Red Bulls. Pustertal is also in strong form, having won seven of their last ten games. With Salzburg, however, the South Tyroleans not only have to play against the league leader, but also by far the best away team. The Red Bulls have only failed to pick up a point in three of their 14 away games.

The sixth and last match to start the new year will be played by the HK SZ Olimpija and the HCB Südtirol Alperia. Both teams face each other for only the second time in the current season. On September 24th, the league newcomer from Slovenia clearly kept the upper hand with 6:2 in Bolzano. However, the former league leader is currently in a crisis of form. They have only won three of their last ten games. Thats why they have slipped to fourth place in the table. Bolzano is right behind them in fifth place. The runner-up of the past season recently lost after already leading with 3:0 in Villach. It was their first defeat after two straight victories.
