After stints abroad in Sweden and Switzerland, Austria's 126-time team goalie returned to Vienna at the beginning of December 2018. Since then, he played 72 games for the Capitals. The 35-year-old was in top form, especially in the last playoffs 2021. Thanks to his strong support, the Caps got a quarterfinal sweep against Hydro Fehervar AV19 - Starkbaum himself excelled with a save percentage of 96.6 percent and even celebrated a back-to-back shutout. But the native from Vienna also proves its qualities in the national team. At the "Beat Covid-19 Tournament" in Slovenia, which Austria finished in second place, Starkbaum had some great saves and also celebrated a shutout. "Bernhard has a lot of experience, you can rely on him. He showed that last season not only with us, but also in his appearances in the national team. I am very happy that Bernhard will also give us the necessary support in the coming season," said Dave Cameron, Head Coach of the spusu Vienna Capitals.

With his signature on the new contract, Starkbaum is now entering his 16th professional season, the fourth with the Caps logo on his chest. "Vienna is my home, I am rooted here with my family, the city is the centre of my life. Of course, last season was not bad, but I always want and strive for more. That's my nature. I still have a great hunger to constantly improve. I want to be a pillar in the team in the coming season, pass on my experience and reach the playoffs with the team. After that, anything can happen," says Starkbaum.
