Highlanders and Sabres Close Out the AWHL Year with Wins

The final games of the calendar year in the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League saw victories for the KSV Highlanders and the Sabres St. Pölten. While the Highlanders claimed a convincing win over the Lakers Kärnten, the Sabres needed overtime to defeat the Salzburg Eagles.

The KSV Highlanders, who had suffered a defeat against the Sabres in the battle for first place on Friday, bounced back to close out the year with a win over the Lakers Kärnten. The Highlanders controlled the game from the opening faceoff and relied on an outstanding performance by Lena Dauböck. The KSV forward scored four of her team’s five goals and led the Highlanders to victory.

League leaders Sabres St. Pölten faced a much tougher challenge in their final game of the year. After a scoreless opening period, the Eagles struck first to take the lead. The Sabres forced overtime in the closing minutes of regulation before Antonia Matzka netted the game-winning goal in extra time. With the win, the Sabres head into the new year atop the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League standings.
