HC TIWAG Innsbruck will play its first leg in the round of 16 of the Champions Hockey League in front of a home crowd on Tuesday. The Tyroleans qualified for the European top class for the first time this year - and sensationally advanced to the knockout phase with victories over Geneva, Belfast and away in Aalborg. There, the win2day ICE Hockey League runners-up will face Finnish team Lukko Rauman. The Liiga champions from the 20/21 season only had to concede defeat in a single game in this year's regular season of the Champions Hockey League. With a total of five wins, former HCB goalie Sam Harvey's new team qualified for the round of 16 from third place. Harvey was in goal for the Finns in two CHL games.

Innsbruck is certainly one of the big surprises of this CHL campaign. In the regular season, forward Corey Mackin in particular stood out, leading the Champions Hockey League scoring charts with five goals (together with Ilves Tampere's Les Lancaster).

The second leg in Finland will be played on Wednesday, November 22. The team with the better overall score will advance to the quarterfinals. The winner of this clash will face the winner of the duel between Ilves Tampere (FIN) and Dynamo Pardubice (CZE) in the quarter-finals.
