EC Red Bull Salzburg celebrated a clear 6:2 away win at Frisk Asker in their Champions Hockey League opener. While HCB Südtirol Alperia won 3:2 after penalties at JKH GKS Jastrzębie on the debut of new coach Doug Mason, EC-KAC won 2:1 at home against the Rouen Dragons after overtime. In addition, five teams from the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League were also in test match action on Friday.
EC Red Bull Salzburg won the first group match of the 2021/22 Champions Hockey League against Frisk Asker with 6:2 and thus took the first three points. The Salzburg side was clearly the better team away from home in a game marked by many penalties and deserved the victory even at this score. After Ty Loney had taken the lead, the Norwegians were able to equalise. In the second period, the Red Bulls pulled away to 3:1. Loney's second goal of the game in the 56th minute made the final score 6:2.
HCB Südtirol Alperia secured their first two CHL points in Poland against JKH GKS Jastrzębie in an extremely even match with a 3:2 victory in the penalty shootout. In line with the game, the visitors took the lead after ten minutes: Miceli saw Catenacci in the slot, who beat goalie Nechvatal for the lead. But the home side turned the game around until the 33rd minute. Shortly before the end of the second period, Catenacci equalised again. After no more goals were scored in the rest of regulation, a shootout had to decide. Brett Findlay and Miceli held their nerves and gave neo-coach Doug Mason a win on his competitive debut.
While Bolzano have an away game against Frisk Asker on Sunday, the Red Bulls play in Poland.
KAC also wins first game
EC-KAC started the CHL season with a 2:1 overtime win against Rouen Dragons. The bet-at-home ICE Hockey League champions got off to a perfect start, with captain Manuel Ganahl scoring in the third minute to take the lead. But the French equalised shortly before the first break. The Klagenfurt team set the tone for the rest of the game, but the home side often failed to score against goalkeeper Matija Pintaric. The score remained 1:1 until the end of regulation time. Only 43 seconds into overtime, the hosts' offensive efforts were finally rewarded when Nick Petersen converted his own rebound for a 2:1 win. On Sunday, the Carinthians will face Rungsted Seier Capital from Denmark at home.
