Following the end of last season, HC TIWAG Innsbruck quickly turned its attention to the future and made several changes to the roster. Forward Steven Owre talks about his comeback after a long injury layoff, the quality of the team, and what will matter most in the upcoming win2day ICE Hockey League season.

The Tyroleans were unable to compete for playoff spots and finished the regular season in last place. “Last season was tough, but I think we learned a lot from it — what we did wrong and how we can improve,” Owre reflects. The 30-year-old Canadian’s serious knee injury in late November, which ended his season, was emblematic of the team’s overall situation.

Strong preseason for Owre and the team
“It was a long process, but everything has gone well. I started skating lightly again in April, and so far everything looks positive. I’m really happy to be back,” says the league MVP from the 2023/24 season about his comeback. In preseason, the center has already shown his quality again; in the most recent test — a 4–3 overtime win against Olten — he also found the back of the net.

Overall, the Tyroleans won five of six preseason games. “For me personally, preseason was about shaking off the rust and getting my timing back. As a team, it’s about getting a few mistakes out of the way early and building from there. We just need to keep developing over the course of the season.”

Innsbruck adds experienced players
Innsbruck underwent a major overhaul over the summer: eleven new players joined the club, including names like Philipp Lindner, Nikita Scherbak, and Sam Harvey. “The league gets stronger every year, but I think we’ve made good progress. We’ve brought in a lot of experienced players. From Austrians to imports — everyone has league experience, and that helps. We already showed that in preseason,” Owre says confidently.

Now in his third win2day ICE Hockey League season, the forward knows what it will take: “I think playing simple will be important. Not trying to make the big play at the wrong time, but keeping it simple — that will definitely be a key factor for us. Consistency is also huge. It’s a long season, with a few more games this time. Overall, it’s about the will to win. We have to be a hungry group and go onto the ice every night with the mindset of winning. So far, it’s gone well, and we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”
