With Joel Broda and Jesper Thörnberg – both new arrivals – scoring, the HC TWK Innsbruck “die Haie” started successful into the preseason and got a 2:1 home win against German side Bietigheim Steelers. Further, the Moser Medical Graz99ers (2:5 vs. Langnau Tigers) and the Dornbirn Bulldogs (5:7 vs. ESV Kaufbeuren) suffered defeats.

Innsbruck opens preseason with a win
The HC TWK Innsbruck “die Haie“ celebrated a perfect start into the preseason, after winning the opener against Bietigheim Steelers (GER) 2:1. With a very solid performance on the defensive-end, the “sharks” minimized Steelers’s chances in the first and grabbed a tight lead. Joel Broda got his colors on the scoreboard about two minutes to go in the opening frame. Early in the second the German side tied it up, as Jesper Thörnberg retook the lead for the Austrian side about one minute later. Following, the “sharks” had the better of the play. New netminder C.J. Motto showed some big saves later in the second. In the last, the Tyrolese revealed a lack of energy but could secure the tight home win until the end.

Graz finalizes „Köln-Cup“ with a loss
Less than 24 hours after the overtime-win against host Kölner Haie, the Moser Medical Graz99ers had to take a 2:5 defeat against Swiss side Langnau Tigers on last the last gameday of the “Köln-Cup”. With Thomas Höneckl replacing Christopher Nihlstorp, the Styrian had the better of the game in the first ten minutes, pulling through on box play too. Despite some chances of King and Collberg the first frame finished goalless. At the beginning of the second King lit the lamp for the Austrian side, assisted by Moderer. But the Swiss side turned it around with a powerplay goal about four minutes to go still in the second. As Yellow Horn and following Oliver Setzinger got penalized, the “tigers” doubled up. Around halfway through the last Karl Johansson brought Graz back into the game, converting a onetimer. Despite some good chances later on, the 99ers had to accept two more goals and a 2:5-loss in the end.

“In view of our first Champions Hockey League campaign we had a very good preseason tournament here in Germany. After two very good periods, we struggled a little bit in the last because of the exertions in the last days”, Graz GM Bernd Vollmann said. The 99ers will play their last scrimmage next Saturday against Stavanger Oilers (NOR) at Maribor.

Dornbirn lose to Kaufbeuren
The Dornbirn Bulldogs lost their third preseason game, as the team of Jussi Tupamäki had to take a 5:7 defeat at ESV Kaufbeuren. Juhani Tamminen and Mikko Vainonen gave the Austrian side a comfortable early lead (3.), scoring of a pivotal position. The German side got better and better and tied the game after 40 minutes (4:4). In the last again Dornbirn scored first, before Kaufbeuren lit the lamp three more times and took the 7:5 win against the Bulldogs.
