The race for the top spot in the Alps Hockey League has tightened even further. HD Jesenice and EK Die Zeller Eisbären both picked up regulation wins on Thursday to move level on points with idle league leaders Rittner Buam SkyAlps. All three teams now sit on 21 points. While Jesenice defeated Kitzbühel 3-1, Zell am See edged Salzburg 1-0 in the local derby to extend their winning streak to seven games. Elsewhere, Asiago cruised past Cortina in the Italian derby, Gherdeina won a ten-goal thriller against Sterzing, and Hockey Unterland snapped their losing streak with a shootout victory in Klagenfurt.
Jesenice remain perfect on home ice
HD Jesenice bounced back from Tuesday's loss to Zell am See with a 3-1 home victory over Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel, extending their perfect home record to five wins in five games. Spari Leben opened the scoring just 98 seconds into the contest before Sabolic doubled the lead with a shorthanded goal in the 27th minute. Krainz pulled one back for Kitzbühel on the power play in the 44th minute, but Sturm sealed the win with an empty-netter 54 seconds before the final buzzer. Jesenice now have 21 points from nine games and sit second in the standings on goal differential.
Zell am See extend winning streak to seven games
EK Die Zeller Eisbären kept their impressive run going with a hard-fought 1-0 road win over the Red Bull Hockey Juniors in the Salzburg derby, recording their seventh consecutive victory. The game remained scoreless until the closing stages, when Predan broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, finishing a play set up by Matzka and Tomazevic. Zell am See protected their narrow lead to secure their first shutout of the season. With 21 points from eight games, the Eisbären climbed to third place and are now tied with Ritten and Jesenice at the top of the standings.
Asiago cruise past Cortina in Italian derby
HC Migross Asiago responded to their recent loss against Sisak in convincing fashion, skating to a commanding 6-2 victory over S.G. Cortina Hafro in the Italian derby. Porco opened the scoring in the second minute before Traversa doubled the advantage early in the middle frame. Although Alverà briefly cut the deficit, Rigoni and Szypula struck before the second intermission to give Asiago a comfortable 4-1 lead. Magnabosco Aguirre and Szypula, who completed his two-goal night, added to the lead in the third period. Adami scored a late consolation goal for Cortina. Asiago improved to 19 points and remain fourth in the standings.
Gherdeina win ten-goal South Tyrolean derby
Fans were treated to a ten-goal thriller as HC Gherdeina valgardena.it defeated Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan 6-4 in the South Tyrolean derby, claiming their second straight victory. After a 1-1 opening period, the game turned into a back-and-forth battle in the middle frame. Sterzing twice erased a one-goal deficit before Bogdanov, Kasslatter and Dostalek scored three unanswered goals in a span of roughly nine minutes to put Gherdeina ahead 5-2. Mandruzzato added another before the second intermission to make it 6-2. Randklev struck twice in the final period to bring the Broncos within two, but the comeback fell short. Gherdeina improved to nine points and moved into eighth place.
Unterland snap losing streak in shootout thriller
Hockey Unterland Cavaliers ended their six-game losing streak with a dramatic 4-3 shootout victory on the road against the EC-KAC Future Team. The hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead through Miceli and Bizjak before Mazzarini got Unterland on the board in the second period. Öffner appeared to put the game away with an empty-net goal in the 59th minute, giving Klagenfurt a 3-1 advantage. However, the Cavaliers staged a remarkable late comeback. Nissilä and Linjala scored power-play goals just 33 seconds apart to force overtime. After a scoreless extra period, Imanac delivered the shootout winner to secure the extra point for Unterland.
