Jesenice defender Miha Oblak suspended for one game

Miha Oblak of HD Jesenice has been suspended for one game due to an incident ruled as boarding (IIHF Rule 41) in Tuesday’s match against the Red Bull Hockey Juniors. The defender will therefore miss Saturday’s home game against Klagenfurt.

Miha Oblak (#69) of HD Jesenice, time 58:00, made contact with an opponent deemed as Boarding IIHF Rule 41. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 – ‘Careless’.

Tuesday night, September 29, in Jesenice, Jesenice D’Man #69 Miha Oblak was involved in an incident deemed as Boarding against Salzburg forward #11 Paul Oberhauser which was penalized during the game with a minor penalty.

With 58:00 played in the game, Oberhauser is positioned along the boards while playing the puck. Oblak approaches and delivers a check which causes Oberhauser to be driven into the boards and fall to the ice. This is Boarding.

The video shows that Oberhauser is in a vulnerable position close to the boards as Oblak approaches. Oblak has sufficient time and space to recognize the position of his opponent and adjust his approach. Instead, he continues with the check, causing Oberhauser to make significant contact with the boards.

The contact is avoidable. Oblak is responsible for ensuring that the opponent is not placed in a dangerous position as a result of the check. The manner in which the check is delivered unnecessarily increases the Risk of injury to Oberhauser. Based on the video evidence, the Department of Player Safety considers the action to demonstrate a careless disregard for the safety of the opponent. As a result, and effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Miha Oblak for 1 game.
