The now 34-year-old Canadian first came to the multinational league for the 2008-09 season, where he played his debut season in Salzburg. He started the following season in Finland with Tappara Tampere and finished it in Germany with the Hannover Indians. He then played for two years in Ljubljana, where he was named "Most Valuable Player" for his performances (11/12), before Villach signed him for the first time. The center recorded 170 scoring points in his first two campaigns for the "Adler". He then moved to Salzburg for a total of seven seasons. With the "Bullen" he won two championship titles. For the 2021/22 season, VSV brought back the leader. In the current season, Hughes holds 47 points (17 goals, 30 assists) and is instrumental in making the Eagles one of the top teams in the league again. Now the Canadian extended his contract early until the end of the 2023/2024 season.

John Hughes, EC Grand Immo VSV: "Villach is a real Hockeytown. I am very happy to continue playing for VSV - the team, the fans and the whole organization are unique. Here, professionalism meets a family environment. My family and I feel very, very comfortable here. I think we can achieve a lot together - I want to become champion with Villach.
