The 33-year-old Canadian first joined the multinational league in 2008/09, when he played his debut season in Salzburg. He started the following campaign in Finland with Tappara Tampere and finished it in Germany with the Hannover Indians. He then played for two years in Ljubljana, where he was named "Most Valuable Player" for his performances (11/12), before Villach signed him for the first time. The center recorded 170 points in his two campaigns for the "Adler". He spent the last seven seasons back in Salzburg. With the "Bullen" he won two championships. In total, Hughes played 739 league games and recorded 865 points (245G|620A).

"Villach is a true hockey town with certainly the loudest and best fans in the entire league. I am very happy to play for VSV again. We also have a top coach in Rob Daum - I'm sure we will have quite a strong team", Hughes said.

"John Hughes is a brilliant player who can make the difference in every game. He's also quite strong on the power play. I expect a lot from him," emphasizes EC GRAND Immo VSV sports director Gerald Rauchenwald.
