After an impressive rookie season with the Steinbach Black Wings Linz in the win2day ICE Hockey League, Jonathan Oschgan is set to take the next step in his career by moving to North America. The 18-year-old was selected 20th overall by the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the CHL Import Draft. In the following interview, the February Young Star of the Month reflects on his successful first season with his hometown club and looks ahead to his upcoming adventure in Canada.

Oschgan made 32 appearances for the Steinbach Black Wings Linz's senior team during the 2025/26 season. The 18-year-old forward left a lasting impression, recording five goals and three assists. In February, he was also named the league's Young Star of the Month.

"It was a really great year. I was honestly a bit surprised that I got the opportunity to play with the first team. Once I got my chance, I just tried to make the most of it. The season turned out even better than I had expected, and being rewarded with the points I produced made it even more special," said Jonathan Oschgan.

The summer brought even more good news for the Upper Austrian, as he was given the opportunity to continue his career in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) – a challenge he is now ready to embrace. "There had already been contact with several teams before the draft. But until the draft is over, nothing is one hundred percent certain, so there was always some tension. When I heard my name called with the 20th overall pick, a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. It was a great relief because I finally knew where my journey would take me."

In total, three players from the win2day ICE Hockey League were selected by the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Alongside Oschgan, EC-KAC players David Waschnig and Johannes Dobrovolny will also join the QMJHL club – something Oschgan appreciates. "We worked towards that because it's much easier to move to a French-speaking province when you already have teammates you can communicate with, people you know and have played with before," explained the 18-year-old. In mid-August, Oschgan will fly from Vienna to Montreal before beginning his CHL adventure.

Before heading overseas, however, the young forward will take part in the Sunshine Hockey League. At the popular summer tournament in Carinthia, Oschgan and his team, "HC Krocha", qualified for the Final Tournament, which will be held this weekend at Heidi Horten Arena in Klagenfurt.
