The EC-KAC got off to a fast and determined start in its first elimination game of the season. As in the last two games, Klagenfurt took the lead in the first period. After just 78 seconds, Paul Postma scored after a remarkable one-touch play. The attack, initiated by Postma himself, was continued down the left wing by Manuel Ganahl and Jan Mursak until Postma was played free and made it 1:0. The KAC promptly followed up just a little later: In the third minute, Thomas Hundertpfund won a duel behind the box of RBS goalie Atte Tolvanen. The Klagenfurt captain then had the eye for Matt Fraser in the slot, who made it 2:0. The Red Bulls hardly posed any danger in the first five minutes of the encounter, but then got into the game better and better. From the sixth minute onwards, the home side exerted strong pressure and had chances through Troy Murphy and Paul Huber, among others - but a superb Sebastian Dahm could not be overcome in the first 20 minutes.

The second period saw an open exchange of blows. Klagenfurt had the first big chance through Hundertpfund while short-handed. At the other end, Dahm defused shots from Mario Huber and Ryan Murphy. In the 37th minute, EC Red Bull Salzburg finally scored for the first time of the evening: Benjamin Nissner had his stick decisively in between Ryan Murphy's blueliner and deflected to make it 1-2.

The Red Bulls pressed for the equalizer in the final period - but the EC-KAC repeatedly provided relief attacks. In the 49th minute, Klagenfurt managed to restore the 2-goal lead. Jan Mursak fed Nick Petersen with a precise cross-ice pass, who finished without any pressure to make it 3:1 for Klagenfurt. In the 58th minute, Lukas Haudum finally decided the game with a remarkable advance: After a move against Troy Bourke and a one-on-one action, Haudum completed the solo attack with a backhander to make the final score 4:1 for the KAC.

This means that the third final meeting in league history between the EC-KAC and EC Red Bull Salzburg will come down to an decisive seventh game. in 2009, the KAC prevailed in Game 7, in 2011 the "Red Bulls" had the longer breath in the all-important game.
