With a 6:0 victory at HCB Südtirol Alperia on Sunday, the EC-KAC celebrated the highest-ever opening win in a finals series. While Sebastian Dahm recorded his second shutout in a row, Nick Petersen scored three times. The league's top scorer became only the fourth player to score a finals hat trick since the league was newly founded. The "best-of-7"-series continues on Tuesday in Klagenfurt.

Both teams started from a secure defensive position, with no real scoring chances. The hosts had a good phase on the power play after just five minutes, in which they got a few shots goalwards. But the KAC survived this sequence and took the lead themselves in the twelfth minute: Martin Schumnig brought the puck in front of the goal and surprised HCB goalie Leland Irving. The score remained 0:1 after 20 minutes.

In the middle period, the game developed into a tense affair, in which it took another lucky bounce for the second goal. A Schumnig shot was deflected decisively by Nick Petersen and rolled over the line - the goal was awarded after video review. HCB was down 0:2, as they had been in the sixth semifinal game against Vienna, and now had their best phase. But KAC goalie Sebastian Dahm had great saves against Ben Youds and also Luca Frigo. When Klagenfurt were awarded their first power play late in the second period, it only took five seconds for Petersen to score on his second attempt. With a faceoff win Thomas Koch did the assist for the third goal - for the experienced it was also the 1000th scoring point of his career in Austria's top division.

Also in the third period, Bolzano could not strike back. Lukas Haudum (49th) was responsible for the final decision when he scored on his own rebound after a beautiful solo run while playing 4 on 4. Thomas Hundertpfund (51st) and Petersen (55th) completed the half dozen and thus ensured the highest opening victory in a finals series so far. While Sebastian Dahm recorded his second shutout in a row, league top scorer Petersen became only the fourth player to score a finals hat trick since the league was newly founded. The "best-of-7"-series continues on Tuesday in Klagenfurt.
