Jan Mursak was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Entry Draft in 2006. A year later, the club signed him, and after two development years on the AHL farm team in Grand Rapids, he finally made his debut in the world's best hockey league in December 2010. In a total of three seasons - interrupted by an impressive lockout engagement with Olimpija Ljubljana with 48 points in 30 games - the Slovenian made a total of 46 NHL appearances for Detroit. After winning the Calder Cup, the championship trophy in the AHL, Mursak left North America in the summer of 2013, followed by four and a half seasons and 236 appearances (for Amur Khabarovsk, CSKA Moskva and Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod) in the Russian-dominated KHL. After joining Frölunda in Gothenburg, the forward captained Slovenia to the Olympic hockey tournament in South Korea, and at club level he joined SC Bern in Switzerland a few months later, with whom he also won the championship in 2019. Most recently, the 35-year-old represented Frölunda again for three years, playing a total of 207 competitive games in the SHL and Champions Hockey League for the Swedish top club.

"Jan Mursak has shown very good leadership qualities at his previous stations, and everything we have experienced and discussed with him so far leads us to believe that he will be a very valuable addition to our team structure. His work ethic and sense of responsibility in both directions of the game are high, plus he has proven in the strongest leagues on the continent that he can also be extremely productive offensively. So he will also play a key role in our attacking game. I think Klagenfurt can be happy about a great new addition," comments Head Coach Kirk Furey on the signing of the Slovenian.
