With a shutout victory in Szekesfehérvár, the EC-KAC took the lead in the win2day ICE Hockey League on Tuesday. After EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV's overtime win against Steinbach Black Wings Linz, the race for the top six remains exciting, while the spusu Vienna Capitals took a big step towards the pre-playoffs.
The KAC clearly won the top meeting at Fehérvár. The Red Jackets took the lead in the 14th minute, Jan Mursak scoring from close range. A short time later, the Red Jackets' top scorer Nick Petersen added his 14th goal of the season: he first won the puck at the boards and then scored himself. Early in the middle period, Mathias From made the preliminary decision. In the final period, Petersen celebrated his brace to make it 4:0 and goalie Sebastian Dahm recorded his seventh shutout of the season. With the win, the KAC also took over the lead in the table from the now second-placed Hungarians.
EC Red Bull Salzburg won their away game against HC TIWAG Innsbruck 6:2 and thus lived up to their role as favorites. However, the reigning champions had to put up a good fight against the team at the bottom of the table, as after leading 2:0, Innsbruck equalized to 2:2 by the second break. Only the superior final third secured the Red Bulls a clear victory in the end. The 17-year-old Leon Kolarik celebrated his first professional goal, Florian Baltram scored for the first time this season after his long injury break. The Salzburg team thus improved to third place.
HCB Südtirol Alperia dropped to fourth place after a shootout defeat in Ljubljana. Olimpija took the lead in the first period through Aljosa Crnovic, Cristiano DiGiacinto equalized in the middle frame. With the score tied at 1:1, the game went into over time and finally into a penalty shoot-out. Robert Sabolic was the only scorer there to secure a home win. The Slovenians thus moved back up to eighth place.
The Moser Medical Graz99ers celebrated their third win in a row to secure fifth place in the table. Although the Styrians were unable to capitalize on a five-minute powerplay spell in their home game against the Pioneers Vorarlberg in the first period, Marcus Vela took the lead with an onetimer after a cross-ice pass through the slot 20 seconds before the end of the period. After equalizing in the meantime, the home side pulled 3:1 ahead in the middle period with Vela's second goal. The Vorarlberg team came close again in the final period, but Graz captain Manuel Ganahl scored his second goal of the evening with an empty netter to make the final score 4:2.
In the eagerly awaited duel between seventh-placed Villach and sixth-placed Linz, the visitors set the tone in the first period. After Graham Knott scored in the eighth minute, the visitors increased their lead early in the second period: Shawn St-Amant scored after a perfect Moro pass to give them a two-goal lead. The Carinthians equalized with two goals within three minutes, but Linz went ahead again through Knott before the second break. VSV then took advantage of a double powerplay spell to equalize through Hancock. The game went into overtime, where Philipp Lindner scored the winner for the hosts.
The spusu Vienna Capitals extended their lead over the eleventh-placed Pioneers to nine points with an overtime win against Pustertal. The two teams engaged in an open exchange of blows: after the Caps took the lead in the first period, the South Tyroleans briefly turned the game in their favor in the middle period. The Viennese replied with two goals and took a 3:2 lead in the 49th minute through Christof Kromp. But Bouramman equalized again and the game went into overtime - where Jeremy Gregoire secured the home win.
