KAC remains the overtime specialist of the playoffs
EC-KAC remains the overtime specialist par excellence in the postseason. The reigning champions edged the spusu Vienna Capitals 2-1 after overtime to record their 26th win in 38 overtime games in the playoffs in their club history. In the first ever quarterfinal meeting between these two teams, the players initially felt each other out in the scoreless first period before Paul Postma grabbed the lead in the middle period. KAC goalie Sebastian Dahm already presented himself in playoff form and initially seemed insurmountable for the Caps. When the 3,400 fans in Vienna's Steffl Arena were already expecting a Klagenfurt victory after regulation time, Nikolaus Hartl was able to overcome the KAC goalkeeper after all and sent the Viennese into overtime. The last season's championship goal scorer Matt Fraser ensured the decision in favor of the KAC. It was the first time in the past six seasons that the Caps failed to win their playoff opener.

Ljubljana steals home advantage from Villach
With the second pick right, EC GRAND Immo VSV opted for HK SZ Olimpija. A few days later, the Villach team could already regret this choice, as they were defeated 4:6 in the opener. However, already the first 30 seconds of the match made the team hungry for more. After only 18 seconds Guillaume Leclerc scored the first playoff goal for HK SZ Olimpija Ljubljana. Exactly ten seconds later Philipp Lindner already equalized the score and made it the fastest 1:1 in the history of the ICE playoffs. After that, however, the Slovenians took sole command and went up 5:1 in the first 39 minutes. The Eagles started a race to catch up and reduced the score to 4:5 until the last minute of the game before Ziga Pance ensured the decision with an empty netter.

Fehérvár makes statement at playoff opener
Hydro Fehérvár AV19 celebrated an 8:1 victory over HC Pustertal and ruined the playoff debut of the league newcomer. Already in the first 18 minutes, the Hungarians were allowed to cheer five times and thus set a new playoff record. In 21 years of playoff history, no team has ever scored more than four goals in the first period. The Wolves could not recover from this shock and even faced a 0:7 at the beginning of the final period before Max Gerlach provided HC Pustertal's first playoff goal in the win2day ICE Hockey League. The Hungarians finally prevailed 8:1 and travel with a broad chest to Bruneck on Friday.

Salzburg against Znojmo sovereign
The superior basic round winner EC Red Bull Salzburg prevailed against HC Tesla Orli Znojmo with 3:1. Before the match Peter Schneider was honored as Most Valuable Player of the first round. A little later - in the 12th minute of the game - he promptly scored the 2:0 for the Salzburgers. After a goalless middle period, Tomas Svoboda scored the equalizer at the beginning of the final period. However, J.P. Lamoureux and the Salzburg defense did not allow another goal. Thomas Raffl finally made the final score of 3:1 with an emptynetter.
