It was a high-paced game right from the beginning with Klagenfurt's Adam Comrie getting a first shot goalwards. The 99ers had the better of the play but as in the previous meetings, they failed in front of the KAC net. After a goalless opening period, the visitors became stronger after the restart. Halfway through the game Stefan Geier fired a shot on goal and he was lucky when it bounced in. Graz wasted some good chances and they were out of luck when Ty Loney only hit the post. The hosts also failed to score early in the third on a 5 on 3 pp. The story continued with KAC goaltender Lars Haugen handling all 25 shots he faced to post a shutout. In the final minutes Mitch Wahl made the game safe and Comrie added an empty netter for a 3:0 road win.

The game in Vienna was a mere 26 seconds old when Heinrich missed the net from promising position. Minute by minute the hosts became better and Sondre Olden opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal. Later in the period VandeVelde got Salzburg on the scoreboard to tie the game at one. At the halfway point of the game Peter Schneider deflected a great pass from Alex Wall to retake the lead but this time Heinrich equalizer with a PP marker. It was Taylor Vause, wo put the Caps 3:2 ahead in the 38 minute. However, Raphael Herburger finished off a breakaway with 21 seconds to go in the middle frame. After a goalless third, the game went into overtime. After a big mistake from Mario Fischer, Salzburg captain Matthias Trattnig scored the game winner for their first win in the series.
