Lakers qualify as fourth team for the AWHL Final Four

All participants for the Final Four of the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League have now been determined. On Saturday, the Lakers Kärnten secured the final ticket with a 4–2 road win against the Graz99ers Huskies. With that victory, the Carinthians finished the Qualification Round in first place and will take part in the Final Four alongside the Sabres St. Pölten, the KSV Highlanders and the VSV Lady Hawks. In addition, three games were played in the European Women’s Hockey League on Saturday – all of them ending in shutout victories for MAC Budapest, HK PSRZ Bratislava and the EVB Eagles South Tyrol.

Graz got off to the better start in the decisive matchup, taking the lead in the 10th minute through Tamara Grascher. The forward also scored the shorthanded goal to make it 2–3 just under four minutes before the end of the game, after the Lakers had pulled ahead 3–1 by the 43rd minute. Following the equalizer, the hosts went all in and pulled goaltender Veronika Padelkova. Shortly afterward, however, the Lakers sealed the win with an empty-net goal and officially booked their place in the Final Four. With ten points, the Carinthians now hold a seven-point lead over Graz, who will play their final Qualification Round game on Sunday against bottom side DEC Salzburg Eagles.

Three shutout wins in the EWHL
Action also continued in the European Women’s Hockey League on Saturday, with all three games ending in shutouts. MAC Budapest caused a surprise by defeating second-placed Aisulu Almaty 3–0, closing the gap to just two points behind the Kazakh side. Budapest’s second team, Budapest Jegkorong Akademia, narrowly lost 0–2 to the EVB Eagles South Tyrol. The South Tyroleans currently sit in third place, just one point behind Aisulu and eight points behind league leaders Sabres St. Pölten. In the third game of the day, fourth-placed HK PSRZ Bratislava recorded a dominant 9–0 victory over Tauron Metropolia Silesia, scoring five of their goals in the final period alone. The two teams will meet again on Sunday.
