Olimpija Ljubljana have made a perfect start to the new season with two wins from two games. The Slovenians have scored 15 goals while conceding just three. Defenseman T.J. Brennan has been on fire with six points, currently tied at the top of the scoring charts with Michael Raffl (RBS). The former Salzburg standout has big ambitions with Ljubljana this season, as he told us in an interview. The Moser Medical Graz99ers, meanwhile, have only played once so far, earning a convincing 4:0 shutout win in Pustertal. Last season, both teams won two of their four head-to-head matchups.

Michael Raffl’s premiere against VSV
For Michael Raffl and EC Red Bull Salzburg, Friday brings a special home game against EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV. For the 36-year-old Villach native, the matchup carries emotional weight—it will be his first-ever game against his former club. Raffl left VSV in 2011 for a stint in Sweden, followed by nine years in the NHL and three years in Switzerland’s NL, before returning to Austria this summer to join the Red Bulls. Like Ljubljana, Salzburg also won both of their opening weekend games. Villach started the season with a 4:2 victory in Budapest, before suffering a heavy 2:7 defeat in Ljubljana. However, VSV have fond memories of playing Salzburg: last season, the “Eagles” won three of the four meetings, including both games in Salzburg.

Capitals host Linz
Another exciting matchup awaits as the Vienna Capitals take on the Steinbach Black Wings Linz. Both teams opened the season with one win and one loss. Vienna edged past Budapest in overtime, while Linz suffered a narrow 0:1 defeat in Fehérvár. Their head-to-head record last season was evenly balanced, with two wins apiece.

KAC’s debut in Budapest
Vice-champions EC-KAC travel to newcomers FTC-Telekom in Budapest on Friday. The Hungarian side are still chasing their first win but managed to collect a point in Vienna on Sunday. Klagenfurt already faced Hungary’s other representative, Fehérvár, last week, winning 4:0 at home before losing 1:4 in a Final rematch in Salzburg.

Also on Friday, the Pioneers Vorarlberg meet HCB Südtirol Alperia. Both teams are still winless. Bozen have only played once so far—against defending champions Salzburg—while the Pioneers lost both of their opening games and currently sit at the bottom of the table. Securing a first win against the strong South Tyroleans would be a major upset, especially as the Pioneers lost all of last season’s encounters.

Fehérvár vs Innsbruck the only Saturday game
The third round concludes on Saturday with Hydro Fehérvár AV19 hosting HC TIWAG Innsbruck. For Fehérvár it’s the only game of the weekend, while Innsbruck will travel to Budapest less than 24 hours later. Both teams hold one win and one loss: the “Sharks” defeated the Pioneers in the West-Derby, while Fehérvár edged Linz 1:0 at home. Last season, Innsbruck struggled badly against the Hungarians, losing all four meetings with a combined score of 20:1.
