"I was asked if I wanted to go on the ice with the kids. It's something that I love to do. So I I said yes," reports Brady Shaw, who was a guest at the "ALL-STAR Skills Camp" in Telfs on Saturday. "When I'm out there it's not so much about teaching. I mean I can offer some tips here and there, but at that age, especially in the summer, it's just getting out there and letting them have fun and trying to enjoy the game of hockey as much as I did when I was that age. I think it's important to do. Keep the love of the game alive and then it'll allow them to have a little more success."

Advice from his father
The winger knows the perspective of a coach very well, as his father Brad Shaw has been a coach in the NHL for over 20 years. Last season, he was part of the coaching staff of the Philadelphia Flyers, mainly responsible for the defense. With the New York Islanders, Brad Shaw, who also was assistant coach of the Italian national team for the Olympic qualification tournament in 2021, also briefly served as head coach. "I've been learning things from him ever since I started playing hockey. We watched a lot of video together and and I'm always amazed at how he sees the game. He's a very smart hockey mind. And I think that's helped me. Currently, I'm focused on my career playing. I absolutely love to play, I'm a highly competitive guy. Maybe down the road, I'll become a coach and follow in my father's footsteps".

The focus is on the upcoming tasks with HC TIWAG Innsbruck. The "Sharks" were one of the surprises of the past season, finishing third. "We had a great season last year. I I think everybody hopes to repeat that when you get a taste of success like that. You're very eager and excited to get back on the ice and prove that it wasn't just a one time thing," said Brady Shaw, who is preparing for the upcoming season. "I came back early to get on the ice a little bit and to get in the gym with some of the guys and our strength coach here. It's going really well, very excited for the season to get going. Sometimes the summer can feel long when you spend too much time in the gym, so you're super excited to get back on the ice."

Champions Hockey League as first big test
For the Innsbruck team, the preseason traditionally starts with a party in the TIWAG Arena. On Saturday, August 19, the sharks will meet Freiburg from the DEL2. Already on August 31, the first big challenge awaits the Tyroleans with the Champions Hockey League opener. In their debut in Europe's best club competition, Mitch O'Keefe's side hosts Geneva on the first matchday. "I'm already very excited. We will play against the top teams in Europe, which will be a great experience."

Just like at the training camp in Telfs, Shaw wants to be a role model for the young players in his team. "I would like to help the younger guys on our team. I want them to feel comfortable coming to me with questions and stuff like that. I know as a young player in a professional league it can be tough sometimes. If things aren't going right, just have someone to reach out to that can hopefully give a good answer. And then also just on the ice and practice it in games, just show them an example of the hard work it takes to be successful".
