At the IIHF Congress in Malta, the Alps Hockey League contract was extended by six more years on Thursday. The agreement was signed by the presidents of the three participating federations.

On September 17, 2016 a new era of a strong and international ice hockey league has started. At the present IIHF Congress in Malta the league's contract was extended from the presidents of the three participating nations Austria, Italy and Slovenia by six more years. The new agreement also obtained approval from the International Ice Hockey Federation. The original contract would have expired with the end of the 2018-19 season.
 
Gernot Mittendorfer, President of the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation: „For the planning security it was very important to get an early decisionabout the league's future. I'm very delighted that we can continue our successful way with a strong league. It's a good development stage for young players.“
 
Andrea Gios, President of the Italian Ice Hockey Federation: „We are happy that we have found a new agreement. This international project is very important for our hockey. It's a good chance for local and young players to get some ice time in a strong league. We have to continue the good work to achieve our next goals.“
 
Matjaž Rakovec, President of the Slovenian Ice Hockey Federation: „The first two years have already shown that Alps Hockey League is a promising project. The contract extension has been very important for setting the direction. With our two teams and the prestigious derby, there is great interest in the league in Slovenia.“
