VEU Feldkirch named Nik Zupancic as their new head coach. Thirteen preseason games have played in the Alps Hockey League last weekend. The Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan opened their preseason with a 3:5 defeat against the Tölzer Löwen (DEL2). Red Bull Hockey Juniors finished Junior Club World Cup on fourth place. Milano and Asiago extended contracts with some more players.
Nik Zupancic becomes new headcoach of VEU Feldkirch
VEU Feldkirch has named Nik Zupancic as their new head coach. The 49-year old Slovenian returns to the place where he has celebrated his greatest success as a player. Zupancic was part of the Slovenian national team in the past and also head coach of HDD Jesenice.
“We are happy to announce the return of Nik Zupancic. He knows the league by heart and the environment of the club. I believe that he will be very important for the development of our young players”, underlined Michael Lampert director of sports. President Pit Gleim completed: “Nik Zupancic has a big reputation in our club and I am happy of the return. He gained a lot of coaching experience in the past years and I am sure, that our fames will be happy having him back in the club.”
Kevin Puschnik has received certainty about his knee injury. The forward needs a surgery and will be out for four to six weeks.
EC “Die Adler“ Kitzbühel suffered two home defeats
EC “Die Adler” Kitzbühel has lost his first two home games of the preseason. On Friday the Austrians suffered a 1:4 defeat against Starbulls Rosenheim. Kitzbühel let a 1:0 lead after first period slip away in the second. The Germans scored four goals in the middle frame and decided the game early. Two days later Kitzbühel lost 3:6 against Eisbären Regensburg. After trailing three early in the game, the “eagles” could not manage to achieve a better result.
Red Bull Hockey Juniors finish Junior Club World Cup fourth
Red Bull Hockey Juniors have reached the fourth place at Junior Club World Cup in Sochi. The Austrians were prompted to semifinal after two clear wins in the group stage. In the semifinal they faced reigning MHL-Champion Loko Yaroslavl from Russia. After a tough fight Salzburg lost 2:8. Next day’s placement game against Ottawa Capitals from Canada ended up tie (1:1). The Juniors lost after shootout in the end.
Plenty of goals in further preseason games
VEU Feldkirch and EC Bregenzerwald have won high score games. Feldkirch celebrated a close 7:6-victory against Swiss team EC Will. VEU took a comfort lead early in the game, but problems on the defensive end created that close result. AHL-opponent Bregenzerwald held the upper hand against Swiss team EHC Basel winning 7:5. The “Wälder” turned the game after trailing 0:2 on an early stage. EC-KAC II suffered a tough 0:10 defeat against Heilbronner Falken (DEL2). The internal league battle between HC Fassa Falcons and Sportivi Ghiaccio Cortina Hafro ended up with a 4:3 win of Cortina. HC Pustertal has posted a 6:2 win against Kaufbeuren Jockers. The “wolves” came out strong and showed their strength in the power play situations. Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan opened up their preseason with a 3:5 defeat against Tölzer Löwen (DEL2).
HK SZ Olimpija lost tournament’s final
HK SZ Olimpija has finished the international tournament at Bled (SLO) second as they lost 2:6 against Medvescak Zagreb in the final. After a 2:0 shutout win against AHL-rival HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice in the semifinal, they came out strong in the final against Zagreb. But the team of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga finished even stronger and rounded off the scoring for the 6:2 result making three goals in the last three minutes. On Sunday Jesenice lost his second game at Bled against the Czech team HC Energie Karlovy Vary after overtime 1:2.
Stefan Ilic stays at Milano, contract extensions in Asiago
Hockey Milano Rossoblu has enlarged the contract of Stefan Ilic. The 28-year old Serbian player starts his third year in Italy. For Rossoblue he playes 86 games so far. The Serbian international scored 9 goals and 38 assists in the past. Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey has extended some more contracts. The youth player Marek Vankus and Andrea Longhini were promoted to the first team, Jozef Voltin (1G/2A in 40 games last season) stayed put.
