It was Nick Petersen’s night on Thursday at the Heidi Horten Arena in Klagenfurt. The EC-KAC forward delivered a sensational performance in the 8–3 home win over Fehérvár, recording six points. In addition to two goals, the Canadian also tallied four primary assists. With that, the 36-year-old became the first player in league history to register six points in a postseason game. Previously, five points had been the benchmark – a mark reached by several players, most recently more than 14 years ago.

Just 19 seconds into the game, the 4,400 fans in the sold-out Heidi Horten-Arena had their first reason to celebrate, as Jan Mursak scored the opening goal after an assist from Petersen. At that point, few would have expected the 36-year-old to add five more points. However, by the sixth minute, Petersen had already assisted on Simeon Schwinger’s 2–1 goal, and less than ten minutes later, he set up Jesper Jensen Aabo for the 3–2.

The same pattern continued in the second period. Just 24 seconds after the restart, the two-time win2day ICE Hockey League champion with KAC struck again, as Petersen set up Thimo Nickl for the 4–3. It turned into a true high-scoring affair, but Fehérvár had no answers as the game progressed. The Hungarian side scored all three of their goals in the first period and was unable to beat Klagenfurt’s defense thereafter.

At that stage, Petersen had assisted on all four KAC goals. He was not on the ice for the fifth, but at 6–3 in the 30th minute, he got back on the scoresheet—this time as a goal scorer. With six minutes remaining, he capped off his performance with his second goal on a two-man advantage, making history as the first player ever to record six points in a playoff game.

Several players had already reached five points

Before Petersen’s record-breaking night, five points had been the highest total in a playoff game – achieved by several players. For KAC, this was accomplished by two players: Johan Strömwall (one goal, four assists in 2001 against Kapfenberg) and Thomas Koch (five assists in 2003 against Feldkirch). The most goals in a single playoff game were scored by Frank Banham on March 15, 2007, for Salzburg – five goals in a 9–3 home win over Vienna. The most recent five-point playoff performance before Petersen came from Rob Hisey, who recorded two goals and three assists in Linz’s 8–3 victory over Vienna on March 4, 2012.

More than 14 years passed before Petersen not only matched that mark but surpassed it, becoming the sole record holder for most points in a single playoff game.

The all-time record for most points in any single game is also held by a KAC player: Andrew Kozek recorded an incredible nine points—six goals and three assists—in a 12–0 home win over Zagreb on January 6, 2019.
