According to the Arbitrator and after reviewing video evidence the player Brett McLean (#15) of EHC LIWEST Black Wings Linz in Bozen on Sunday, February 19th 2017, time approximately 38:02, made contact with an opponent deemed as Slashing IIHF Rule 159. As per the EBEL Fundamental Rules V. 5,1 (b), video evidence was sent to PSC(IDOPS) for a final verdict. From the perspective of DOPS, it is clear that Brett McLean demonstrated a motion on the opposing player that is defined in the IIHF Rule Book as Slashing.

In Bozen, a slash occurred involving #15 - Brett McLean causing an apparent injury to an opposing player. As the video shows, the Bozen player in possession of the puck, is skating out of his defensive zone along the boards. Brett McLean reaches with his stick towards the Bozen player who is ahead and in a position to succeed up ice ahead of Brett McLean. The play was elevated to supplementary discipline, due to Brett McLean, realizing he cannot catch and from a position behind the Bozen player, locates his left hand in a position just underneath his right hand (top hand) to create a baseball like swing of his stick.  Although the swing is not overly aggressive, it has been determined that Brett McLean targeted his stick swing - directly on the wrist area of the opposing player with the heel of his stick.  It is also determined that McLean, knowing he had no play on the puck, resorted to a aggressive means with his stick as a tactic which caused an injury to the Bozen player. The Bozen player had no way to defend himself and is considered unsuspecting to the slash to a vulnerable area of his body. Brett McLean is suspended for 1 game effective immediately.
